It was Ordell’s 40th year, and my 50th Birthday. I had booked a break through O’Connors Campers, for Sarah & myself to travel into Cornwall in a vintage VW campervan by the name of Ordell. I had always dreamt about owning a VW camper, so the chance to actually drive one I was really looking forward too. It was the Monday morning, at the end of October when we set off, the Met Office were forecasting for ‘Big Storms’ to hit the West Country.
The night before we had experienced really bad winds and heavy downpours of rain, I thought to myself, was this fair to take out such a classic camper as Ordell into this weather? On arriving at O’Connors campers, my concerns were put at ease by Zoe, who dealt with the administration for the company.
Both Zoe & Melissa, who gave us a great in depth talk around Ordell, before venturing out, reassured us that the weather was supposed to be improving and to go and enjoy our travels. So off Ordell went, with Sarah & myself heading into Cornwall. Our first stop was Padstow, where we spent the night at The Padstow Touring Park. The following nights were spent at Heligan Touring Park (near Mevigissey), and Caradon Camping Trelawne (near Looe). We highly recommend these sites.
During our travels we covered quite a few miles, from Okehampton to The Lizard and back again. Well it seemed quite a lot when travelling at a more sedate pace than usual. We had originally opted to stop overnight where ever possible, but due to the cold weather decided to go for electrical hook ups on camp sites.
This gave us the chance…… or should I say myself…. to warm up with the fan heater provided in Ordell, as Sarah had by now resorted to hot water bottle and blanket whilst travelling, as Ordell supplied plenty of Classic cool air whilst on the move, this time of year. Ordell was a great experience and pleasure to drive, once I had mastered finding the elusive 2nd gear, everything seem to then run more smoothly.
It was great to take in the scenery at a much slower pace than you would normally drive in our modern cars of today. Since returning home, Sarah & myself have both said ‘It’s a must do again Holiday’. We had a great time with Ordell and enjoyed the whole experience from start to finish. Many thanks to all the team behind these fabulous classic campers. See you another year. Andy & Sarah.
