North Morte Farm, Mortehoe, Woolacombe EX34 7EG Tel: 01271 870381
Don’t be put off by the static caravans when you arrive or the very formal looking reception. Once you’ve driven over to the camping area your patience will be rewarded by the most spectacular views over the cliffs and to Lundy Island. There are no regimented spots and a wonderful walk to Rockham Bay. Great facilities here. The campsite is just five minutes walk from the village where there are three pubs – The Chichester Arms, The Smugglers Rest and The Ship Aground. Open Easter – September.
Lee Meadow Farm Camping, Lee, Mortehoe, Woolacombe EX34 8FF Tel: 01271 889002
Another one in the same area, but we just had to include this recommendation: “It was lovely - the couple who owned it - Trudy and her husband (whose name I can't remember!) were really friendly, the toilet/shower blocks were brand new and spotless. It was quiet, peaceful and totally unspoilt.” Open during the summer hols only.
Warcombe Farm Camping Park, Mortehoe EX34 7EJ Tel: 01271 870690
Large campsite, though tranquil and pristine even in high season. Open March – end October.
Puttsborough Sands, is one of the few beaches that allow you to camp in the car park, so you can wake up next to this gorgeous beach, and if you’re feeling lazy can wander over to the beach café to devour a freshly cooked breakfast before the surfing starts! Actually, great surf for beginners here. None of the usual campsite facilities here, just a beach toilet & it can be quite pricy during peak season (but the views of the sea are worth it!)
Cherry Tree Campsite, Croyde EX33 1NH Tel: 01271 890495
Great views and a very relaxed atmosphere here, lots of people we know use it each summer, but still quite secluded and lovely! They have 7 fields divided very thoughtfully into family/singles areas with a generous amount of space around your pitch. No electric hook up available here. Minimum of 3 nights in the summer. We have met Yvonne who works there and she recommends that you ring in advance, although calling in is possible. Cherry Tree is on the road out of Croyde on the way to Puttsborough Sands. Enjoy! (Yvonne also recommends Lobb field, which is on the way to Braunton). Open April – August.

This one is a farmer’s field belonging to Sally Tripp, with no facilities but there are some public loos nearby and you can get a shower (£1.50) in the local pub, The Pig’s Nose, whilst you wait for your lunch. The Pig’s Nose Pub is a genuine smugglers pub dating back 500 years and serves rather lovely ale straight from the kegs, so on that balmy summer’s evening drop off in here and quench your thirst before you go and light your BBQ! Lots of lovely pubs in the area. A good spot for walkers as you can walk along the South West coastal path from East Prawle to Salcombe taking in Prawle Point and East Portlemouth.

A working farm, with spectacular views of Salcombe! This is a relatively new eco-site: no pitches marked, no hook-up facilities and compost loos (immaculate, by all reports!) Very dog-friendly, a well-stocked farm shop and direct access to the estuary (ideal for those who like a paddle). Thoughful touches like their magical glade which is stocked with tea lights would make for a memorable evening - dont forget your guitar. Located in the lovely village of South Pool (which has a pub) and close to Salcombe and Kingsbridge. If you like back-to-basics camping in a fab location, this could be the one for you! Open late Spring – end October.
Coombe View farm, Branscombe EX12 3BT Tel: 01297 680218
Thoroughly recommended by O’Connors’ customers: “Coombe View Farm is a great small campsite. It's just above Branscombe and is a gently sloping site with amazing views one way across to the sea at Branscombe Mouth and to the other towards fields and countryside. The facilities are fairly basic but the shower was brilliant. It feels more like camping than some of the larger sites and it was by far our favourite.” In the village, The Mason’s Arms and The Fountain Head Inn both serve good food and real ale. Open Easter to October.

This site is in a lovely setting, within walking distance of Widecombe and the wonderful Rugglestone Inn which serves real ale and hearty food – perfect after a moorland walk. The site is run by an elderly couple who are quite happy to leave you to your own devices (and they allow fires next to the stream), the facilities are quite ‘basic’ though. Open April – October

St.Winnow (near Fowey). Tel: 01208 872327
To really live the dream, this little village has a small site that has been divulged to us by some friends. It is a very basic site that just has running water: you will have to bring your own loo! But the location is superb, right on the river Fowey where you can sail or just laze around, a bit. ‘Wind in the Willows’ but with G&T! People take tents, yurts and campers, and you can do the whole experience of camp fires too. It’s a great location near to Restormel Castle, Edward the Black Prince’s romantic stronghold, the pretty village of Golant and Fowey.
