North Devon

Explore the very best coastline and surfing spots

Fabulous views, un-commercialised, low impact and environmentally friendly site. Lots of good reports about this one. Open April to October.

Set high up above the Valley of the Rocks with breath-taking sea views. Flat, spacious fields with lovely facilities. Open 1st March – 31st October.
Allows one camper van or tent per night for £7 per person. Use of shower/toilet. Features a wildlife walk in the 80 acres around it. Jackie, who owns Huxtable Farm says “Campers can have total solitude & escapism, enjoy being away from it all and see the stars at night as we are situated close to Exmoor’s Dark sky reserve area. Free Wi-fi is also available in the garden area and although we do not have hook up electricity, the games room next to the shower & W.C. has electric points for charging phones etc. Laundry & drying facilities are available and there is a small shop selling Jacob sheep products; gloves, hats, scarves, cushions & throws.
Don’t be put off by the static caravans when you arrive or the very formal looking reception. Once you’ve driven over to the camping area your patience will be rewarded by the most spectacular views over the cliffs and to Lundy Island. There are no regimented spots and a wonderful walk to Rockham Bay. Great facilities here. The campsite is just five minutes walk from the village where there are three pubs – The Chichester Arms, The Smugglers Rest and The Ship Aground. Open Easter – September.

Another one in the same area, but we just had to include this recommendation: “It was lovely – the couple who owned it – Trudy and her husband (whose name I can’t remember!) were really friendly, the toilet/shower blocks were brand new and spotless. It was quiet, peaceful and totally unspoilt.” Open during the summer hols only.

Large campsite, though tranquil and pristine even in high season. Open March – end October.

Puttsborough Sands, is one of the few beaches that allow you to camp in the car park, so you can wake up next to this gorgeous beach, and if you’re feeling lazy can wander over to the beach café to devour a freshly cooked breakfast before the surfing starts! Actually, great surf for beginners here. None of the usual campsite facilities here, just a beach toilet & it can be quite pricy during peak season (but the views of the sea are worth it!)

Great views and a very relaxed atmosphere here, lots of people we know use it each summer, but still quite secluded and lovely! They have 7 fields divided very thoughtfully into family/singles areas with a generous amount of space around your pitch. No electric hook up available here. Minimum of 3 nights in the summer. We have met Yvonne who works there and she recommends that you ring in advance, although calling in is possible. Cherry Tree is on the road out of Croyde on the way to Puttsborough Sands. Enjoy! (Yvonne also recommends Lobb field, which is on the way to Braunton). Open April – August.

Lovely, small campsite with beautiful coastal views. Walking distance to the beach. Clean facilities. Open June to September. Small number of mains hook ups. No dogs!
Large, luxurious campsite with outstanding facilities (including a fishing lake). Five minutes walk from the two beaches at Coombe Martin. Open Easter – October
Perfectly situated between Exmoor and Dartmoor, this site can be found almost halfway between Tiverton and South Molton on the B3137, in mid Devon. It is a working farm & you can join in the daily delight of animal feeding & egg collecting! A small site with good, spacious facilities. Open all year.
Small campsite with real attention to details and very friendly owners. Lovely clean facilities, games room and woodland walk. 10 minutes drive from beaches. Open Easter – end October
Tiny campsite set on a working farm, with small farm shop on site. Great views over Lundy Island and well placed for visiting North Devon attractions. Family run & very welcoming. Open all year.
A very small site (16 pitches), situated… “in an area of outstanding natural beauty…a mile from Hartland point in North Devon. The 6 acres of Loveland farm sit between rolling fields with the dramatic North Devon coastline just a stones throw from the site. Features beach huts, housing washing facilities, shower and composting toilet.” Open mid-March to end October.
Set on a working farm with lovely clean facilities. On site shop. Walking distance to pub (Hartland Quay Hotel) and access to the coastal path and beach. Sea views. Open Easter – end October

South Devon

Beautiful coastline, pretty towns and villages

  • 01548 511229
  • East Prawle, Kingsbridge
This one is a farmer’s field belonging to Sally Tripp, with no facilities but there are some public loos nearby and you can get a shower (£1.50) in the local pub, The Pig’s Nose, whilst you wait for your lunch. The Pig’s Nose Pub is a genuine smugglers pub dating back 500 years and serves rather lovely ale straight from the kegs, so on that balmy summer’s evening drop off in here and quench your thirst before you go and light your BBQ! Lots of lovely pubs in the area. A good spot for walkers as you can walk along the South West coastal path from East Prawle to Salcombe taking in Prawle Point and East Portlemouth.
Just the best place to go with (over) active kids. This fantastic campsite has great clean facilities, a beautiful setting with challenging and unusual play equipment to keep the kids entertained. Those camping in the Country Park have free access to the facilities including a good café bar. Take bikes for the kids & wetsuits too are useful for all the river activities! Open April – end September.

Set on a working farm, overlooking the Teign Estuary and close to the sea. Small site with hook ups available & clean facilities. Easy access to beach and village. Well positioned for visiting Torquay.  Open Easter – end September.

This is a basic, but quiet site with lovely views. Quite a small campsite, but it does have electric hook up points available. It is around 1.5 miles from Salcombe & 5 miles from Kingsbridge, so very well placed for exploring the South Hams. Open March to October.

A small, relaxing, family-run Campsite, with views over Bigbury Beach and easy access to the Coastal Path. Open beginning April – 1st Oct.

A working farm, with spectacular views of Salcombe! This is a relatively new eco-site: no pitches marked, no hook-up facilities and compost loos (immaculate, by all reports!) Very dog-friendly, a well-stocked farm shop and direct access to the estuary (ideal for those who like a paddle). Thoughful touches like their magical glade which is stocked with tea lights would make for a memorable evening – dont forget your guitar. Located in the lovely village of South Pool (which has a pub) and close to Salcombe and Kingsbridge. If you like back-to-basics camping in a fab location, this could be the one for you! Open late Spring – end October.

East Devon

Wide open areas and jaw dropping Jurassic coastline

Thoroughly recommended by O’Connors’ customers: “Coombe View Farm is a great small campsite. It’s just above Branscombe and is a gently sloping site with amazing views one way across to the sea at Branscombe Mouth and to the other towards fields and countryside. The facilities are fairly basic but the shower was brilliant. It feels more like camping than some of the larger sites and it was by far our favourite.” In the village, The Mason’s Arms and The Fountain Head Inn both serve good food and real ale. Open Easter to October.

Dartmoor

There's no place like it!

  • 01364 621258
  • Widecombe, Newton Abbot TQ13 7TG

This site is in a lovely setting, within walking distance of Widecombe and the wonderful Rugglestone Inn which serves real ale and hearty food – perfect after a moorland walk. The site is run by an elderly couple who are quite happy to leave you to your own devices (and they allow fires next to the stream), the facilities are quite ‘basic’ though. Open April – October

This 32 acre site was recommended by our customers Richard & Bryony Bates. They are returned for a second time as they were so impressed. This is a large site with 110 pitches, but is well kept & immaculate with wonderful grounds and great facilities: including a heated shower block! There are two large fields for dog walking & on site restaurant, open during high season. Open March to January.

Somerset

Wide open countryside and plenty of cider!

This one has been recommended recently by some of our customers and seems ‘wonderfully scenic & organised without being too bossy!’ They do allow dogs, but not children as the campsite is bordered by the river Exe. Open mid March – mid October

Located in Exmoor National Park, with the river Exe on three sides. This site has a small farm shop and children can takes rides around the farm on the back of a tractor. One field is fenced off from the river. Open Easter – November.

I have added this one as some recent hirers were very impressed with this fabulous site and its immaculate facilities. It is situated not too far from the nearest village (which has a great tearoom!) and has horse-riding available on site. Open Mid-March to end October.

Cornwall

Best of both - coast and countryside

Amazing views. You can wander into the woods and collect your firewood and really feel you’re back to living off the earth. Family friendly, lots of walks and close to a Sustrans Cycle route. Can be used as a base to visit the South Cornwall gardens, (Eden and Lost Gardens of Heligan). Described as relaxing, un-crowded and no clumpy caravans! Oh and yes, one of the best village pubs down the road! (Am I too pub orientated?!) Open between mid-May and the end of September.

Added this one after a recommendation from a family who loved the friendly welcome and position of this site: the owners are lovely and took their kids off to feed their farm animals one afternoon (which they loved!). The facilities are clean, though quite basic. The pitches are spacious and set in a large area of landscaped park. This site is just a few miles from the Eden Project and not far from the Camel Trail. Open all year.

Recommended by some customers who visited with Uma. They described the site as ‘peace and quiet in a beautiful setting’. Open 1st April – 31st Oct

Wonderful campsite with lots of facilities for children & dogs (even a doggie shower!) Great choice for a family holiday. Open Easter – end October

Large family campsite with heated out-door pool. Close to Widemouth Bay. No minimum stay (useful for last-minute summer bookings!) Open all year.

Amazing views. Seven acre campsite, situated on a farm, close to several beaches and only three miles from the village of Boscastle. A short walk to the highest cliffs in Cornwall and the coastal path. Basic but clean facilities. Open Easter – end October.

Panoramic views from cliffs overlooking fabulous South East Cornwall coastline.  A hidden part of Cornwall which always reminds me of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five.   Smugglers Inn, Seaton is the nearest decent pub. Mike is offering our campervans £1 off each night.  Open all year.

Award-winning, lovely small site with great facilities. Peaceful location: no bar or club on the site. Open all year.

Small family run site. The only campsite located conveniently enough to allow you to stroll into Padstow. Basic, but clean and very friendly.  Open Easter until the end of September

This one has been recommended to us by numerous locals who loved the campsite’s private beach & gorgeous location. A good one for those camping with children. Rumour has it that a yummy fish & chip van visits during the summer! Open April 1st – October 28th

If you have smaller children this could be the ideal spot for your family. Set on a farm park (families camping here have free access to the facilities) and just ½ a mile from beautiful Porthcothan Beach. Children can start the day with feeding the farm animals and there is always lots to do. On-site café which is open for breakfast and free wifi! Lanes are narrow but a bus stops just outside campsite for trips to Padstow or Newquay. Open Easter – October

Set in areas of beautiful woodland. Relaxed camping with wonderful facilities including a heated swimming pool. Ideal for families & one which many return to, year after year. Open 1st May – Mid September.

This location has inspired people to move down here!  Just set across the road from the life guard (Baywatch springs to mind!) patrolled beach where you can surf, swim, body-board or simply relax and read the papers. Pub and café nearby. Open mid-March to end September.

This one is a little quieter and more basic than Porth. It is a few minutes walk along a sandy path to the beach and has a natural sandpit for the kids. Open March – October

Another in the same area…this one has just been suggested by some locals who love this site. They say it’s close to the two gorgeous beaches of Polly Joke and Crantock and has a pub with good food available on site. Open April – November

Opened in 2014. Ideally located for accessing the beaches. Calendar of craft workshops available during high season. Lovely facilities. Walking distance (25 minutes to Watergate Bay – take a torch) to St Columb Minor and The Farmers Arms. Very warm welcome from owners. Open April – end October

Walking distance to the beach and to Perranporth. Children’s play area. Lovely, clean facilities. Great pub on Perranporth beach called ‘The Watering Hole’, where the kids can play in the sand. Open from Easter to end September.

A very friendly site with immaculate facilities and beautiful views of the sea. Within walking distance of three beaches. The owners have clearly put some thought into the whole campsite a wonderful café. I can’t wait to visit, myself! Open April – Septembert

A very relaxed peaceful, place with no fixed pitches. Working farm with friendly pigs, ducks and chickens (sadly, no dogs allowed, here). Lake with boat. Kayak available to explore coast around Gorran Haven and Charlestown. Open fires encouraged! Open Easter, then May – October.

Great sea views. You can find this online when you put in Chapel Porth.  Have chatted with owners and they seem very accommodating. Allegedly, a great bar here called the Blue Bar. Open April – October

Situtated right on the South West Coast Path, this small and lovely campsite is very welcoming and dog-friendly. Spacious pitches and peaceful location. Open end of March – October

This campsite is set within a 1930’s traditional working ‘nature’s way’ farm (chemicals have never been used in the farm’s history).  Overlooking a truly spectacular panorama of coastline, the farm is situated on the South Coast Riviera of Cornwall adjoining the charming fishing village of Portscatho.  If that is not enough to tempt you, the farm also has private access to three sandy coves.  Open all year.

This is a luxury camping option. This site has won GOLD “Caravan Park of the Year” at the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2015. As you might expect this site has outstanding facilities & offers a warm welcome. Great campsite to visit with your dog as there are lots of National Trust beaches in the area, which allow dogs all year round. Open Easter – early October

Rachel and her family run this organic small holding. They usually provide Yurt Holidays but have kindly said they’d welcome us!  The facilities are very eco-friendly, with solar showers and a compost loo in a league of its own, with fantastic views!  They are a few minutes from wonderful ancient sites, have the luxury of breath-taking views over to St Michaels Mount and are near the beach.  You can buy eggs and veggies from her too! Sounds idyllic! They are only open during the summer – so get there quickly (oh yes, maybe in a leisurely fashion, you do have a camper van after all!).

This little place has only 12 pitches within a walled garden.  Very pretty country garden feel and great owners who have been here for a while.  It’s near Penzance, on the way to Land’s end, in an area with a ‘prehistoric feel’ about it.

This is a large, well-laid out site with lots of great facilities ie club house & shop. For those after a good base for walking the Coastal Path this site is ideal: the walk to Cape Cornwall from here being particularly beautiful. The B3306 Lands End to St Ives scenic coast road (approximately one mile to the North of St Just) is apparently a great run in your campervan!  Open: April – end of October

One of the larger sites, but well placed for visiting the coast (very close to Praa Sands) and thoroughly recommended by one of our previous customers. Kids are well catered for with a great play area and nature trail. Open March to October

Lots of our customers returned from their summer holiday, this year, raving about this one. It’s a friendly, small campsite with around 30 pitches. It’s well positioned with great views and within walking distance from two good pubs and the beach. Washing & toilet facilities are basic and unisex. Open all year

  • near Fowey

To really live the dream, this little village has a small site that has been divulged to us by some friends. It is a very basic site that just has running water: you will have to bring your own loo!  But the location is superb, right on the river Fowey where you can sail or just laze around, a bit. ‘Wind in the Willows’ but with G&T! People take tents, yurts and campers, and you can do the whole experience of camp fires too.  It’s a great location near to Restormel Castle, Edward the Black Prince’s romantic stronghold, the pretty village of Golant and Fowey. To find St.Winnow follow the river Fowey from Lostwithiel down towards Fowey and it’s just before Golant on the opposite side of the river.

Delightful, small campsite with lovely clean facilities. Dog-friendly and with access to the Coastal Path. Peaceful location with beautiful sea views – one of those special campsites that people return to year after year. Sounds like a winner! Open April 1st – October 1st.

Wonderful views and outstanding facilities here. As pointed out in ‘Cool Camping’, “the only problem is then finding other campsites with equivalent luxury.” Well placed for exploring the town & beaches. We must recommend this site quite frequently as it seems to be a favourite spot for our campervans meeting up on their travels. Expensive, but justifiably so. If you are visiting Ayr outside of peak months (July & August) they will offer O’Connors Campervans 10% off!  Open all year.

Large rural site with brand new facilities and views of the Telea. Two miles from St Ives, with a regular bus service available. Open May – end September.

This is a quiet, family run campsite, with spacious pitches, overlooking St Ives Bay. “Beautiful brand new facilities set in a stunning location amongst the sand dunes at Gwithian Towans. Will definitely be heading there again.  It was our favourite site. Whilst there, we left our van at the park and ride and caught the little train to St Ives. Definitely the best way to arrive there, as parking is virtually impossible.” Open March to October.

Quite a small campsite with rather basic facilities: beware that this one can get very busy during the summer due to the wonderful location. Close to the long sandy beach, backed by dunes. 10 minutes walk down the hill to the beach or a two minute free-wheel on your bike! Shops, toilets & café at the beach.  Open Easter – October

Set on a working, family farm, this relaxed site has good clean facilities & small shop, but really it’s all about the location. The beach can be reached just 10 minutes from the campsite (though the return journey is all uphill!)  The Coast Path will take you to Sennen where there are pubs and shops. Dogs are welcome at the campsite but only allowed on the beach after 7pm. Open Easter – Oct

For Your Last Night…Occasionally customers have found themselves racing back to return their campervan from the far reaches of Cornwall.  This is not a stress-free end to your holiday, nor is it healthy for the vans. Can we suggest choosing a campsite closer to Okehampton at the end of your holiday? Give yourself a break: try one of these for your last night.

A new campsite, opened in 2014, this one has been very well received! Tim & Rebecca are really friendly. Lovely new shower block with under-floor heating! Late arrivals welcomed. Open March – end November.
